The definition of a mentor is, “An experienced and trusted advisor.” Every successful leader will say they had a mentor whom they trusted to seek advice on special projects, areas of development, and career progression. Having strong mentors in your life can propel your career to new heights.

Why you should find a mentor?

  • There is an open-door policy but… gathering advice from someone outside of the situation to gain feedback will also be valuable.
  • Everyone needs someone to look up to, someone to push them and someone to inspire them.
  • The trust levels are high between yourself and your mentor. What that means is the mentor has the ability to really tell it like it is without sugarcoating. A mentor can show you where you need to improve when you can’t see what you need to improve on.

Now more than ever leaders need to be strong mentors. Being a mentor doesn’t require a ton of time. Your relationship with a mentee could last one hour or years. Many think they don’t have the experience to be a mentor or why would someone listen to me?! Mentors can be your peers, friends, bosses, or someone with a certain skill or experience.

Why should you be a mentor?

  • Your experience could help shape someone else’s future. You aren’t doing this for any reason other than self-gratification or to help someone else.
  • You likely know more than you think….sharing is caring.
  • Your ability to help others learn and grow is a leadership skill you will be cultivating. You will be able to build your own communication and leadership skills.

I encourage you to be a mentor and find a mentor. The benefits are endless. Good luck!
